The Running Summit comes to the Chicago area for the second time as Running Summit Midwest, June 20-21 at Loyola University. The event will bring together seven top coaches, authors and professionals in the sport to share their expertise: Jack Daniels, Jonathan Dugas, Peter Thompson, Ross Tucker, Sage Rountree, Lara Dugas and Neeru Jayanthi. The Running Summit will feature four lectures by Dr. Jack Daniels as well as 1-2 by each other presenter. Eligible coaches can earn CEU credit for USATF Level 3, USAT, BOC, NSCA, IPTA and Athletics Canada.
The event is open to all coaches, runners, and medical professionals regardless of their previous experience or certification level.
Dr. Jack Daniels will present on Ingredients of Success, Principals of Training, Aerobic Profiles and How to Plan a Season. Jack is an Olympian, world-famous coach, exercise scientist, author and mentor. A two-time Olympic medalist in the Modern Pentathlon and world-renowned exercise scientist, Jack was named “The World’s Best Running Coach” by Runner’s World. He led Cortland University runners to eight NCAA Division III National Championships, 31 individual national titles, and more than 130 All-America awards. Jack coached seven athletes to the U.S. Olympic team and has advised dozens of Olympians and medalists. He is world-famous for writing Daniels’ Running Formula, a 1998 book outlining his unique training philosophies.
Jonathan Dugas, Ph.D. will present on the physiology of thirst and fluid balance and the role of science in coaching. Jonathan is co-author of Runner’s World The Runners’s Body and The Science of Sport blog. Jonathan Dugas obtained his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Cape Town in 2006. His thesis, supervised by professor Tim Noakes, was titled “Temperature responses to exercise and performance”, and looked at fluid replacement, body temperature and performance during exercise in both the lab setting and in competitions, such as the Two Oceans 56 km Ultra-marathon and the Cape Argus/Pick ‘n Pay 109 km Cycle Tour. Jonathan is currently the Director of Clinical Development at The Vitality Group, in Chicago, IL.
Ross Tucker, Ph.D. will present on pacing strategies for distance runners and the role of science in coaching. Ross is Professor of Exercise Physiology with the School of Medicine of the University of the Free State. He obtained his PhD from the University of Cape Town, where he studied fatigue, the brain and limits to performance, including the regulation of pacing strategy. He also obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Sports Management and Marketing from the UCT Commerce Faculty, and then working in sports business, sponsorship and high performance sports management.
Peter Thompson will present on how to design more effective sessions with the New Interval Training. Coach Thompson, who has competed and coached for more than 50 years, has trained athletes who have competed in the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, and the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Track & Field World Championships.
Sage Rountree, Ph.D. will present on recovery, as well as yoga, strength, and flexibility. Rountree is an internationally recognized authority in yoga for athletes and an endurance sports coach with certifications from USA Triathlon and RRCA. She is author of The Athlete’s Guide to Yoga (VeloPress, 2008), The Athlete’s Pocket Guide to Yoga (VeloPress, 2009), The Athlete’s Guide to Recovery (VeloPress, 2011); and The Runner’s Guide to Yoga (VeloPress, 2012); creator of The Athlete’s Guide to Yoga DVD (Endurance Films, 2008); and a contributor to Runner’s World, Yoga Journal, and USA Triathlon Life.
